1/72 Tu-22 M3 Backfire C

Developed in the late 1960s, the Tupolev TU-22M “Backfire” entered service in the Soviet air forces during the 1970s and a Cold War icon can be considered, also for its characteristic design. The “Backfire” is a twin-engine strategic bomber with variable geometry wings capable of transporting and employing both nuclear weapons and conventional weapons. An advanced plane for the time was a marked improvement over the previous Soviet strategic bombers. Thanks to its two powerful engines, installed under the tail, the Tupolev bomber could reach the speed of Mach 1.9 and was a formidable opponent for the U.S. air defense and NATO countries. The “Backfire” also specialized in conventional attack against surface ships. A large number of TU-22Ms, with the end of the Soviet Union, was used, with subsequent improvements in avionics and engines, by the Russian Air Force.
